Shelomith was a Jewish slave in Egypt who journeys with the Israelites and Moses during the Exodus. Her son, whose father was Egyptian, is accused of blasphemy and is stoned to death. This artwork depicts the sorrow of a mother whose son is harshly punished and who sees injustice where there should have been mercy and understanding. The wall of Jerusalem stone behind Shelomith represents the Jewish people, and the block upon which she rests represents her son, whose presence no longer adds support to this wall.
