Dreams of My Youth Before Jerusalem Crumbling V
Dreams of My Youth Before Jerusalem Crumbling V
This piece is one of a series of drawings, prints and paintings which explore the religious and spiritual state of the land of Israel. In this painting, a female form lies in despair in front of the ancient walls of Jerusalem’s most holy site of the Jewish people. The walls are depicted as if they are crumbling, and the figure lies outside of its protective embrace. This painting depicts the struggle and frustration felt as an ancient land wrestles with contemporary issues, while trying to maintain its spiritual and religious integrity. It also represents the ongoing struggle for the religious freedom of women, and is reminiscent of the lack of women’s inclusion within mainstream historical interpretations of Jewish history and theology.
