The great beauty, Bathsheba, wife of Uriah, is drawn into an adulterous union with King David after he spies her bathing.  To protect the honor and life of his pregnant mistress, David entices Uriah to return from battle and join his wife, but Uriah's noble impulses force him to sleep, alone, at the palace gates.  David has Uriah killed in battle, marries Bathsheba, and soon mourns the death of the unnamed child, conceived in deceit.
